Lab Equipment Essentials: Autoclaves, Incubators, Ovens & Chambers

What each piece of core lab equipment does — and how to tell them apart.

All resources

Sterilisation and clean handling

Autoclaves sterilise media, glassware and waste with pressurised steam. Biosafety cabinets protect the operator, product and environment when handling biological material. Laminar air flow cabinets provide HEPA-filtered clean air to protect the product only — they are not a substitute for a biosafety cabinet.

Incubation and cold storage

Lab incubators hold a stable temperature for cultures. BOD incubators work at lower, cooled temperatures for biochemical oxygen demand and water testing. Lab refrigerators store reagents and samples at controlled cold temperatures, and ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers store sensitive samples far below standard freezer temperatures.

Heat and drying

Hot air ovens dry and dry-heat sterilise glassware. Vacuum ovens dry heat- or oxygen-sensitive materials at lower temperatures. Muffle furnaces reach very high temperatures for ashing, loss-on-ignition and heat treatment.

Environmental testing and process control

Stability and humidity chambers hold set temperature and humidity for shelf-life studies. Orbital shakers and magnetic stirrers mix samples consistently. Recirculating chillers keep reactors and instruments at a precise temperature.

Buying checklist
